If the VW Jetta 1.4 T sedan were a beverage, it would be whiskey on the rocks. It’s a straight-forward, non-nonsense compact sedan that transcends the few promises it makes. We said so much about an automatic transmission model we tested last year, and it is all the more true with the satisfying stick-shift version. Other compact four-doors can be sexier (Mazda 3), newer (Chevrolet Cruze), or inexplicable ubiquitous (Toyota Corolla), but the Jetta is solid merchandise.
The current Jetta looks just like a kid drawing a three-box sedan as it was back in 2010 when it was introduced. There is a long rectangle on four wheels with a smaller rectangle propped on it, adorned with rectilinear headlights and rear lights, door handles, and not much else. While the nicer Jetta sel and gli stuff that casing with muddy, higher-quality interiors, the 1.4 T S and SE (the latter is the model we drove for this review) make with dashboards and door panels made of hard plastic with a slight shimmer Shaped. The soft padded inner surfaces next to the comfortable seats are the armrests of each door.

With its diesel emissions cheating, Volkswagen lost the confidence of the American people, which is a shame because its gasoline engine cars are still quite good. Take the 2016 Jetta SE. Powered by a peppy, gasoline-burning engine, it is one of the most affordable compact sedans available. It’s an explosion to drive, has more interior space than its competitors, and it has a whole lot of tech in the cabin. A 1.4-liter turbo engine makes the Jetta SE, with available upgrades to a 1.8-liter turbo and a hybrid. The Jetta Gli, the most powerful in the model range, comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 210 hp.
Not discount the base engine, however, as this zippy small four-cylinder puts out 150 horsepower and 184 pounds-feet of torque. A standard five-speed manual transmission Gets the power to the front wheels, although our test vehicle has arrived with the six-speed automatic, with no surcharge. The turbocharger helps that tiny engine put out more power by forcing more air into the cylinder, but turbos notoriously take a little time to coil what turbo delay, or a dead spot if you hit the throttle.
Luckily, the Jetta’s turbo coils fast and there’s not much noticeable lag. The engine runs down to the redline with ease, making it a spry little four cylinder in fact. The six-speed automatic can be moved manually from the stick, but honestly the transfer does a fine job on your own. It’s nice to have a manual mode at certain times, like turning on or down a mountain pass, but 95 percent of the time people find themselves giving up control to the computer.
The Jetta does a nice job of smoothing out the rough streets of the city, and the speed-sensitive electric power steering provides fast inputs and a nice weight in speed. The Jetta SE runs on 16-inch alloy rims with all season tires, which most buyers should only do well. At the end of my week with the Jetta, I averaged 27.5 miles per gallon over a combined stretch of city traffic and highway stretches, much less than the expected EPA fuel rating of 32 miles per gallon combined (28 city/39 highway). However, my heavy right foot may have had something to do with it.
If you stay with the five-course handbook, Volkswagen claims an EPA fuel rating of 28 miles per gallon in the city, 40 on the highway, and 33 combined.
