2022 VW Atlas: What We Know So Far
2022 VW Atlas It’s been three years since the Volkswagen Atlas took off into the full three-line crossover SUV scene, but it’s still getting a full facelift.
VW claims this is the first example of its new policy of shortening its standard four-year renewal cadence, but this nose job isn’t purely for arrogance.
It also brings increased pedestrian protection to the bumper structure which adds to the overall length by about 3 inches.
Of course, as with all the repetition, it seems that way, the new look – especially on the sporty R-Line trim shown – strives for a more aggressive mien than ever before, with black accented patch fascia vents and a fake front skidplate looking ready to push. – starting Bonneville speed record racers (it’s just prepared to push pedestrians gently).
The side cladding and rear bumper were also revised and macho to match the design of the new wheels, which are 18, 20, or 21 inches in diameter.
VW is refreshing the Atlas 2022 with new front and rear views that increase the overall length of the SUV by nearly three inches.
A more attractive three-spoke grille adorns the front end, as do the revised headlamps that now feature standard LED elements. Models with the R-Line option are equipped with custom badges, body kits, and 20 or 21-inch rims.
Inside, you’ll find a new steering wheel, updated stitching on the seats, an 8.0-inch touchscreen (on SE and SEL models), and the latest iteration of VW’s Car-Net smartphone app.
The four-cylinder Atlas is now available with all-wheel drive for the first time.
2022 VW Atlas Redesign
The Volkswagen Atlas 2022 has the boxy look, spacious interior, and spacious practicality that have characterized SUVs for decades. It’s also one of the largest mid-sized crossovers, with a giant footprint that gives way to three broad rows of seating.
VW wanted the Atlas to look and feel like a hospital room, but it made up for that sterile aesthetic with many of the features it wanted. A pair of steady, yet quiet engines motivate either a front-drive or all-wheel-drive SUV.
And 2022 offers a range of standard driver assistance and confident handling traits, but don’t expect the Atlas to be as attractive or sophisticated as the best in this segment.
The VW Atlas review three-line SUV enters the 2022 model year with a facelifted look that gives it a similar look to its smaller counterpart, the two-row Atlas Cross Sport. It also offers additional powertrain configurations and several new technology features.
The new Atlas is almost three inches longer than the previous model, but the improvement is due to the shape of the front and rear bumpers and doesn’t change the interior space.
The chrome line spans the width of the car between the headlights which is more angular and aggressive than the previous model. However, the new three-row Atlas front end isn’t quite the same as the Cross Sport, as the lower air intakes look a little different.
2022 VW Atlas Interior
The family-friendly interior space, direct control layout, and abundant cupholders make the Atlas a practical choice, even among other very practical rivals.
Plus, the third row of seats that can comfortably accommodate a full-size adult is a sure win. The Volkswagen atlas interior design of the Atlas is uncomplicated and useful – perfect for families but not too much for a stylist.
The cabin should accommodate anything a suburban family can throw away, and there are plenty of carefully placed storage nooks for storing small items.
In our baggage testing, Atlas impressed us by fitting four carry-on cases behind the third row and 38 behind the first, just like the very large Honda Pilot.
No matter which trim you choose, the Atlas is well connected and ready to entertain. Intuitive touch screen interface and responsive like smartphones in general.
The Base S model features a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities, a six-speaker sound system, Bluetooth telephone, and audio connectivity, Wi-Fi hotspot, and a USB port.
Upgrade to the SE or SEL model and the infotainment display increases to 8.0 inches, three additional USB ports appear from the center console, and the SiriusXM satellite radio and two more speakers combine.

Also new to Atlas is VW’s updated Car-Net app, which allows owners to lock and unlock doors, honk the horn, see the location of their vehicle, and remotely start their vehicle via their phone.
The Atlas 2022 is also equipped with new optional driver assistance features including traffic jam assistance and display of road signs. There is also a new steering wheel with the new VW logo, which can also be seen on the Atlas exterior.
2022 VW Atlas Engine
The Atlas comes with one of two engines a 235-hp four-cylinder or a 276-hp V-6 both are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front or all-wheel drive. The V-6 feels and sounds smooth, transmitting slight vibrations into the cab.
Although the four-cylinder model and the last V-6 we tested had moderate acceleration, on the road, they rarely felt underpowered.
While it’s not as fun to drive as the Mazda CX-9, the Atlas responds dutifully to steering input and never feels awkward. Composed on the highway and agile in the city. The ride was smooth, and all but the hardest holes were absorbed.
New all-wheel drive is available with a standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine and an optional 3.6-liter V-6 engine; Previously only available on the V-6. Both engines are still paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
2022 VW Atlas MPG
The Atlas fuel economy rating is not a breakthrough for this class of large box family carrier but its real-world performance is not far off from the fuel source of this segment.
Both the V-6 and the four-cylinder models outperformed their EPA ratings on our 200-mile real-world test route. The Atlas V-6 delivers 24 mpg, and the four-cylinder model delivers 27 mpg.
2022 VW Atlas Price and Release Date
The Atlas 2022 costs a little more than last year’s model. However, we would recommend the V-6 powered SE with the Technology package. Those who want 4Motion all-wheel drive can add it for $ 1,900.
