2022 VW Tiguan the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan recently won a silver medal in our battle of the six-way compact crossover, surprising many Car and Driver editors with its excitement and how much it reminds them of the hot hatch GTI.
VW’s popular compact crossover continues to impress with a sleek new design for the 2022 model year and the many new standards and technologies available.
While VW continues to offer its compact crossover in the form of a short and long wheelbase in other markets, the brand will once again sell the wider long-wheelbase Tiguan in the United States.
While only releasing images of the smaller variant, the longer US-spec model will adopt the same exterior and interior updates as the stubbier model.
This includes a reworked front and back, which brings a more distinct style to the models of America’s best-selling brands – especially in the guise of the vibrant R-Line.
LED headlights and taillights are now standard across the model line, while the revised badging further brings the Tiguan’s appearance on par with the recently released Atlas Cross Sport, revised Atlas, and updated Arteon.
2022 VW Tiguan Redesign
While the Tiguan 2022 retains the crossover’s current basic interior design, the model welcomes a myriad of technological innovations that Volkswagen hopes will help enhance the user experience.
But most of the significant changes to the 2022 Tiguan are in the cabin. This SUV uses a new multifunctional steering wheel, as well as a redesigned center stack that houses a redesigned touchscreen.
That central display runs VW’s newest infotainment system, dubbed the MIB3, and now every Tiguan comes standard with a digital instrument cluster. The basic digital instrument cluster measures 8.0 inches and an optional 10.0-inch screen (standard on the SEL R-Line).
The Tiguan S gets standard fabric seating, available in Titan Black or Storm Gray, while the mid-range SE and SE R-Line models get standard faux leather in four different color options: Titan Black, Storm Gray, Cinnamon, and Horizon.
The last two color choices are new for 2022. Meanwhile, the SE R-Line with the topping range gets genuine leather seats in four different color options: Titan Black, Storm Gray, Noisette, and Barrell Craft.
The most interesting new Tiguan is the SEL R-Line model, which we will get, Yanks, rather than the more attractive R model in Europe, but we will try to forget about it.
The R-line adds 20-inch, 19-inch wheels to the SE R-Line model, and gets custom R-Line bumpers and black accents throughout. All Tiguan 2022 features a completely redesigned face with a slimmer grille, a larger lower air dam that helps remind us even more of the new Mk 8 GTI, and sharp standard LED headlamps.
We prefer this new look over the 2020 model’s somewhat square front. The proportions of the other Tiguan are similar to the previous model, and on the back, the “Tiguan” badge is centered under the Volkswagen logo.
2022 VW Tiguan Interior
The interior of the Tiguan picks up speed, aiming for interesting things that we’ll also see in other new VWs like the Golf and Arteon. Each trim gets new interior decoration options, in addition to a new steering wheel with multi-functional touch capabilities.
There is a Fender audio system, such as 15-color ambient lighting and a touch module for temperature control. A heated cloth seat is standard on the S trim, while the SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line trim move to faux leather and leather.
A digital cockpit is standard on the Tiguan 2022, and again like the new Golf GTI, it has a digital steering wheel with touch-sensitive buttons. A heated seat is standard, and the temperature, along with temperature control, is adjusted via a touch slider.
The new Tiguan will be equipped with VW’s MIB3 infotainment system with a standard 8.0-inch touchscreen, although a 10.3-inch screen is standard at higher trim levels. Additionally, a 15-color ambient light system is standard on all trims, as is the Fender audio system.
VW’s new Travel Assist system is now available on the Tiguan and can take over vehicles at speeds of up to 130 mph using adaptive cruise control and lane guard assistance, both included in the optional driver assistance package.
On the technology front, each Tiguan will come with a VW Digital Cockpit gauge screen, measuring 8 inches at the bottom and 10 inches at the top.
Complementing that screen is a dashboard infotainment setup that powers VW’s new MIB 3 system, which includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 6.5-inch screen hangs on the base trim, growing to 8 inches outside the SE.
2022 VW Tiguan Exterior
Within a decade, the Volkswagen Tiguan has risen from obscurity to become an SUV that is quite an in-demand, with global production figures only reaching less than 1 million units in 2019.
It is immensely popular in Europe, and the newest generation has greatly expanded its US. footprint too. Now, Volkswagen has prepared a mid-cycle refresh aimed at boosting those sales figures.
Volkswagen on Tuesday unveiled the updated Tiguan 2022 crossover.
The exterior keeps the general shape the same, but the front end has been revised with standard LED headlamps that look much more similar to those on the upcoming eighth-generation Golf.
The usual mid-cycle decorations are here, like new wheels, new paint colors, and new bumpers.
2022 VW Tiguan Engine
Speaking of trims, each one carries unique complementary features. The entry-level Tiguan S packs 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and LED headlights and taillights.
The SE sports 18-inch wheels, power rear doors, touch-style climate control, adaptive cruise control, and lane guard assistance, while the SE R-Line Black rocks bigger wheels and dark accents.
At the top of the lineup is the SEL R-Line, which sports a 20-inch roller and packs the largest Digital Cockpit display, in addition to ambient lighting, predictive adaptive cruise control, and road sign recognition.
All four trims rely on the same 2.0-liter turbocharged I4, producing 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Front-wheel drive is standard, but buyers can add all-wheel drive and third-row seating (as a combination package) to every trim except the base.
Like the new Arteon before it, Europe got better results from this bargain; In addition to the more pedestrian variant, the EU also has the 315-hp Tiguan R and a plug-in hybrid variant. Disappointment.
Like the current Tiguan, 2022 will be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
During Car and Driver testing, the 2020 model rolled out to 60 mph in 8.3 seconds, placing it in a lower position than its competitors, the Toyota RAV4 (8.2 seconds), Mazda CX-5 (7.9 seconds), and Honda. CR-V (7.6 seconds). The stop/start system is standard, and we also observed 22 mpg during the 250-mile highway fuel-economy test.
2022 VW Tiguan Price and Release Date
Although prices remain unannounced, look for the Tiguan 2022 entry fee to be slightly up in comparison to the current model, which starts at $ 25,965.
Given the added features and a more attractive appearance, the Volkswagen Tiguan 2022 is worth the wait. Even if that means waiting more than a year after the updated VW crossover goes on sale in other parts of the world.
From another version, we found US customers will get a long-wheelbase version of the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan, which VW says will arrive at dealerships in fall 2021.
The current 2020 model year will be carried over as the 2021 model. Prices for the updated 2022 Tiguan are expected to start at around $ 25,000 for the S model and above $ 34,000 for the attractive R-Line SEL model.
