With the shift to electric vehicles becoming more common every year, and a wide selection of EVs for families, the Volkswagen Microbus 2022 aims to tackle a largely untouched market. The Microbus moniker commemorates the German company’s iconic Microbus Type 2 or VW Bus for short, which inspired the design of the new retro van.
While we’re still waiting for the full details, we have a good idea of what the new VW van will offer. The all-electric powertrain is expected to provide a driving distance of about 300 miles. The cabin will feature a flexible seating configuration and the exterior will adopt a unique nostalgic aesthetic. The new Microbus still has to make its official debut but this is what we know so far.
While the Microbus 2022 currently only exists in concept form, VW has confirmed that a production version will go on sale in the United States. Likewise, the ID Buzz concept features many futuristic technologies and innovative features that may hit the market.
2022 Volkswagen Bus Redesign
The new VW Bus is getting a major update and is evident in its spacious and comfortable interior that can accommodate large and small groups. The spacious, adjustable interior features seats that rotate and move around the track on the floor.
Passengers benefit from being able to adjust the interior to rest and sleep comfortably. The revamped microbus can accommodate sufficient supplies for multi-day road trips.
It also has ample luggage space at the front and rear and is 194.5 inches long, 8.5 inches shorter than the Honda Odyssey Minivan and 4 inches shorter than the Ford Explorer.

2022 Volkswagen Bus Exterior
The revamped and redesigned Microbus exterior is two-tone, with strips of light illuminating the surroundings of the vehicle for a unique visual mark. The LED headlamps feature hexagonal segments that serve as eyes to communicate the status of the vehicle, and the near-zero body overhang and 22-inch wheels make the ID Buzz look modern and timeless, which is the hallmark of the VW brand design.
There are rectangular windows, a few windshield blinds, and rear side air vents that match the original design.
Like many new cars on the market, the ID Buzz will use a touch screen to control car functions instead of knobs or buttons. You can also unlock the car with your phone instead of a traditional key. From the folding steering wheel and pop-up laser scanner on the roof to the head-up display integrating augmented reality ID Buzz is all about innovation!

And while Volkswagen plans to introduce technology into the ID Buzz that will eventually allow for autonomous driving by the mid-2020s it will now feature an augmented reality and a laser scanner on the roof to make the driving experience easier.
2022 Volkswagen Bus Interior
One of the most interesting details about the new Microbus is its spacious, configurable interior. The three rows of passenger van seats can be swiveled around (yes, including the front seats), placed, or removed entirely. This opens up countless variations and plenty of room for activity.
The movable center console slides back and forth on the track and contains tables. We’re not sure how many fantastic interior concepts will be produced, but cutting-edge features include a folding steering wheel and a head-up display with augmented reality. The microbus will also have luggage.
Initial images from the Microbus infotainment system show an iPad fitted in a housing growing from the center console. While it’s a new way of providing features and information that are standard or optional on most modern cars, we’d expect VW to equip the van with a more conventional dashboard-mounted touchscreen that supports the latest iteration of the Car-Net software.
That means Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Wi-Fi hotspot should be on the list. We also expect a generous number of charging ports and maybe some sort of rear-seat entertainment system.
When it comes to chairs, you get a lot of seats. Two seats per row to be precise, which makes sense since it’s following a microbus footprint. The real crème de la crème, however, is how each seat (front and back) sits on a slider and can be completely adjusted, removed, and even rotated. This would be an excellent feature if it got past the conceptual development stage.
The main difference with cargo is, as you might expect, the number of seats. Though the seat layout is a very unique bench seating design for three passengers. The driver’s seat is normal, and a bench seat for two people is placed in the normal passenger seat. But after taking the last two rows of seats, it’s estimated that Buzz Cargo could carry 1,764 lbs of cargo behind.

In the engine section, Volkswagen has announced some specific information about the concept’s electric powertrain. The passenger version uses an electric motor in the front and rear axles that produces a combined 369 horsepower and provides an all-wheel drive.
The cargo version called ID Buzz Cargo has a standard 201-hp electric motor at the rear of both front-mounted motors available for those who want all-wheel drive. Microbus will use Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive (MEB) platform, which currently supports the company’s products such as the Audi e-Tron 2020 crossover.
So the ID Buzz will have 369 horsepower from the electric motor on each axle which also provides an all-wheel drive and the 111 kWh battery pack on the floor will provide a range of around 300 miles per charge. Using VW’s fast-charging system, it can recharge to about 80 percent of its energy capacity in 30 minutes at 150 kW! ID Buzz will reach a top speed of 99 mph and go from 0-60 mph in five seconds.

VW says Buzz Cargo’s battery capacity starts at 48 kWh and can be increased up to 110 kWh. The company says its batteries will provide 200 and 340 miles of mileage, respectively. However, the figures are based on the European WLT cycle, which is generally very optimistic. VW claims that those who plug in the DC fast charger will be able to charge 80 percent in just 30 minutes.
One of the exclusive features of Buzz Cargo is the solar charging system. Since worker vans spend a lot of their time outside, Volkswagen has adopted a way to charge the car while it’s parked. On the roof of the car, solar panels are placed to charge the battery and can increase the power to 9.3 miles per day. While that doesn’t sound like much, it does build up with battery charging and, over time, increases the range of the vehicle.

Neither the EPA nor VW has yet announced information on how efficient the Microbus will be. After the official number was released, and we had the opportunity to test it on a 200-mile long highway, we were able to evaluate its efficiency in the real world.
2022 Volkswagen Bus Price and Release Date
The EV in question is a van that will share its ground with other members of the ID family. This model will go into production in 2022 and will be assembled in Germany and then shipped throughout the world, including North America. The information was confirmed by Volkswagen US boss, Johan de Nysschen, to MotorTrend.
The production model was previewed by the ID Buzz concept in 2017, a study powered by a pair of electric motors for an all-wheel-drive layout with a combined output of 369 horsepower (275 kilowatts). The Buzz name hasn’t been confirmed for the production version but de Nysschen says it’s used internally inside Volkswagen.
VW hasn’t said how much the Microbus will cost or what trim levels it will offer. However, the current market prices for EVs have us expecting to start at around $ 40,000. Since this is a van, a type of vehicle known for its incredible configuration and versatility, we would not be surprised if VW offered the Microbus as a cargo van as well as a passenger van.
