Work on the next generation of Volkswagen Golf is in full swing and the German manufacturer plans to bring the model into production in June next year. The car manufacturer is already testing prototypes of the eight-gen Hatchback and is preparing for its assembly with a huge $2.2 billion investment.
The new golf will produce a number of versions, including a hardcore golf R hot Hatch, which is supposed to be the most extreme golf of history. A new report by Auto Express claims that the mega-hatch will have a 400 horsepower (298 kilowatt) thanks to a mild hybrid drive. The information was confirmed to the British magazine by the sales and marketing head of the brand, Jürgen Stackmann.
The identity of the engine under the bonnet remains a mystery, but Auto Express suggests that the car will use the same mechanical arrangement as the model that is still in the market today. This means that a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine sends electricity to all four wheels through a double-clutch seven-speed automatic transmission and the company’s 4motion-AWD system.
The internal combustion engine is supported by a mild hybrid technology with a 48-volt electrical system. It will provide electric buoyancy during acceleration and also help ensure that the vehicle registers better fuel consumption in the cities.
The extra force will be consistent with the design, which will be much more dramatic and aggressive than on today’s model. Quad tailpipes, more exposed carbonfaserdetails and large air strokes in the bumpers make the hot hatch easy to distinguish from the standard golf versions.

“With some expressive design, R can go beyond the rational side of things,” explains Stackmann. “It [the brand R] can find its place in another league of pure performance and there is a space where the customers are willing to pay a considerable amount of money.
The next golf will appear 2019 with the faster R-model, which will give its public debut a year later. The extra power over the outbound model means that you have to do a bit more than before, but – a price tag of almost £40,000 is probably because VW wants to chase the above-mentioned RS3 and A45.
